Mein Chairs 25th NERPC Meeting in Kolkata, Setting a Strategic Course for the Power Sector in the NE Region

KOLKATA: Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh and NERPC Chairman, Chowna Mein, led the 25th North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC) Meeting today in Kolkata. Hosted by NTPC Ltd and NERPC Secretariat at The Oberoi Grand, the gathering addressed critical power sector issues, emphasizing collaborative efforts for sustainable progress in the region.

During the session, DCM Mein highlighted the importance of collective endeavors and announced crucial decisions to advance the power sector’s growth, ensuring a steady electricity supply and improving residents’ living standards.

Key initiatives, including Mock Black Start Exercises and proactive measures like surge arresters and transmission line upgrades, were underscored. Mein announced the finalization of the Guwahati Islanding Scheme, urging stakeholders to expedite its implementation and explore similar schemes for other NER State capitals.

Expressing gratitude for Ministry of Power support, DCM Mein announced full funding approval for SCADA/EMS upgradation, a substantial Rs. 80 Crores per state project. He encouraged innovative hydro project designs, commending Arunachal Pradesh for MoUs on 12 Hydro Projects with NHPC, SIVN, and NEEPCO.

Addressing unique challenges, Mein stressed the NERPC forum’s pivotal role, highlighting RDSS and urging DISCOMS and State Governments to settle outstanding bills. He initiated the formation of the Power Ministers’ Forum for the North Eastern Region.

The meeting, attended by Power Ministers from North Eastern States and key stakeholders, marked significant strides in advancing the power infrastructure in the region.
