The Health Minister inaugurated “BSL-III” in TRIHMS campus

NAHARLAGUN, SEPT 10 : The Minister for Health & Family Welfare, SJETA & WCD Alo Libang has inaugurated a hi-tech, sophisticated and specialized laboratory  “ BSL-III” in the campus of Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Science (TRIHMS) today.

The laboratory has a hi-tech facility testing facility for drug resistant medicines,  research facility for faculty, students and other important microbiologists. All types of facilities are fitted in the laboratory including RTPCR machine, full computerized AC system with facility of disposing of biodegradable waste materials. Facility to take the samples and testing results.

Inaugurating the laboratory, Health Minister Alo LIbang said that this is the only such type of laboratory in the state and is second in the North East region after Assam. It is a happy moment that the government of India has granted this laboratory and it would cater to the needs of the state and its people in time to come. It would also fulfill the facility for research activities for students pursuing medical education in the said institute, apart from students the microbiologist and faculty of the institute and health department would get opportunity to get research activities in several drug resistant medicines. He said.

We inaugurated one of the highly sophisticated laboratory  BioSafety level-III Research laboratory “ BSL-III laboratory” funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The maintenance and other servicing would be done by the agency establishing the equipment and machinery for next three years and after that the TRIHMS, health department or state government may take it up for its proper utility for which I have directed the officers present. LIbang said.

“ I have inspected the laboratory and its machine and after that through a powerpoint presentation made by the medical officers and found that this laboratory would fulfill its research activities for the control of MDR TB and other drug resistance “. I also hope that the medical facility conning up in the campus would serve the much needed medical facility of the capital region, even though we will continue to upgrade the PHC/CHE in all other areas including rural areas. LIbang said.

During the Covid 19 pandemic several infrastructure and medical equipment and manpower has increased manifold and the state government will continue to do so. He said adding that the medical department is also fully prepared to increase any attack of Covid 19 in future as we have been containing the spread of the corona virus in the most effective way.  

TRIHMS Director Dr. Jini inform that as of now there are four types of such laboratory starting from (Biosafety level )BSL-I to IV, as of now BSL-III laboratory are available in Assam and the 2nd one is in state, the laboratory is having all technology to test and carry research on drug resistant medicines,

We have BSL-II where at TRIHMS where the RTPcR test are being done and still fully functional, it is an achievement for our state and it will be used for specific purpose to study the TB (MDR or ExDR) and further we will send these samples and report to other specialized laboratory at Bhopal, Pune or Delhi for complete and case study. Several sophisticated research will be further also be done as per requirement. Dr. Jini said.

AIIMS, Bhopal Director cum Project coordinator Dr Sarman Singh interacted at the inaugural ceremony and with the Minister through video conferencing has assured to take care of the asset and assured to support in research activities.

TRIHMS Assistant Professor, Microbiology cum Co-Principal Investigator Dr. Mika Umpo elaborated the detail of the machines, technology and procedure and process of testing facility, research activity to be undertaken and further utility of the laboratory for faculty and others through power point presentation (PPT).

Principal Investigator of CBT Project cum DDHS Dr. Moi Nyori speaks about opportunities and challenges and further requirement of items during the course of investigation and testing process.

Principal Secretary Health Dr. Sharat Chauhan, Chief Engineer, PWD, Drawing, Design and survey & Investigation) Atop Lego,  DHS Dr. M Lego, Director Family welfare, director medical education and other senior officers of health department among staff of TRIHMS were present on the occasion.
