Robin Hibu needs major eye surgery after workout accident

ITANAGAR, JUN 2; Robin Hibu, IPS, Special Commissioner Delhi Police, needs to undergo a major surgery on his right eye after injuring himself during workout accident recently.

According to reports, Hibu has been undergoing treatment for over a month following the accident and is yet to recover.

Armstrong Pame, an IAS officer of 2009 batch belonging to Manipur cadre who claims himself to have received help from the senior police officer in the past, talking to social media on Wednesday sought prayers for early recovery of Hibu.

Stating that Hibu has served as ‘local guardian’ for the people of Northeast region in the national capital and other major cities of the country by extending help to anyone who sought his help, Pame said, “He has done too much and all that I am asking for today is to remember him for his quick recovery and also possible surgery”.

“Today if you and I fail to ask God to intervene we will be guilty to ask his help in future and for all that he has been to us”, he appealed emotionally in his statement.

Hibu is the first Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from Arunachal Pradesh and has received several accolades and awards including President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Services in 2010 and 2017.

Hibu was also conferred the Police Medal for his meritorious service in 2010, in addition to twice being honoured with the Gold Medal in 2003 and 2009. He was also decorated with the prestigious UN Peace Medals for Service in Kosovo in 2000 and Bosnia in 1999 by the legendary U.N. Secretary General Kofi Anand for his distinguish service in U.N. Police as U.N. Police Commander at Gjilane, Kosovo and Bosnia Herzgovina, Yugoslavia.

He is also a recipient of two State Arunachal Gold Medals awarded to him by Governor General (Rtd.) JJ Singh and Governor Late RK Sharma in Itanagar.

Apart from his job, he is an avid social worker and has won several prestigious awards. Notable among these are the Samajik Ratna Puraskar (2007), Social Work for Minorities Award in 2018 by Delhi Minorities Commission, and the Global Mahatma Gandhi Award, 2019.

In 2016, Hibu founded a non-profit called ‘Helping Hands’, to address distress calls from students, young men, and women from the region suffering exploitation at the hands of employers and middlemen. It includes a network of myriad professionals like lawyers, chartered accountants, government services, and ordinary citizens whose aim is to assist the Northeasterners in distress. (AA)
