APWWS raises alarm on escalating polygamy trends and legislative setback

The Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) extends gratitude for the platform to address concerns surrounding the surge in polygamous practices adversely affecting women in the state.

Deeply troubled by the exploitation of women and the erosion of gender equality, the organization highlights the concerning trend of using women as political tools.

The focus sharpens on the setback encountered with the withdrawal of the Arunachal Pradesh Monogamy Election Bill 2023 on September 6, 2023.

Spearheaded by Ninong Ering, MLA (INC), the bill aimed to restrict individuals with only one spouse from running for elections. APWWS expresses disappointment that the bill wasn’t subjected to debate, emphasizing the vital need to address polygamy-related issues in the pursuit of gender equality.

The society calls on leaders, especially within the Congress party, to actively support measures endorsing the eligibility of individuals with one spouse for elections.
