2 die in firing along Assam-Arunachal border, CM Khandu terms incident as ‘unfortunate’

ITANAGAR, Jun 05: Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu today termed the Torajan incident as unfortunate where two persons from Assam shot to dead by unidentified persons while three other persons allegedly went missing in a fresh border-related violence that initially took place at Panbari in Dhemaji district of Assam.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu while addressing the media reacted to the firing incident that took place this morning at Torajan village in Kangku circle under Lower Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. He assured to initiate an inquiry soon with the help of Assam counterparts.

He expressed sorrow over the ‘unfortunate’ incident.

In a reply to media persons, the CM said, “Today, I learned about an unfortunate incident that occurred in the Lower Siang district. I have already spoken to the local MLA and DC and directed them to visit the place where the incident occurred. I have also directed Chief Secretary Dharmendra to contact the Assam counterpart and appeal to them to come to the incident place.”

“Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and I earlier constituted a committee to demarcate the boundary within six months. We also directed the committee to maintain peace and tranquility and to contact both local Deputy Commissioners if there are any issues,” he added.

According to police sources, the firing incident occurred in the inter-state border area where locals gathered for a plantation drive on the occasion of the World Environment Day. During the incident, two persons from Assam died, and three others went missing after the firing that took place along the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border in Assam’s Dhemaji district on Monday.

The locals arranged a plantation drive in the inter-state border area on the occasion of the World Environment Day. Seven villagers from Assam had gone in advance to make the arrangements in the morning. They allegedly came under shooting attack by unidentified persons in which one person died on the spot. Three others sustained bullet injuries and were taken to the Dhemaji Civil Hospital by locals, where one person died, police sources added.

Police are investigating the whereabouts of the other three missing persons, police sources added.Earlier, an MoU was signed by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal CM Pema Khandu on April 20 in New Delhi, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, to resolve the decades-long border row.
