Former MLA Yumsen Matey Killed near Indo-Myanmar Border in Tirap District

ITANAGAR, DEC 16 – Yumsen Matey, the former MLA of 56 Khonsa West assembly constituency, was reportedly killed near Raho village along the Indo-Myanmar border in Tirap district on Saturday afternoon. Tirap SP Rahul Gupta confirmed that Matey was abducted from a function and later found dead in a jungle, with the assailants fleeing towards the international border.

“The ex-MLA had gone to Raho village for personal work with three workers. An unknown person took Matey alone into a jungle, leaving the workers behind. After around 30 minutes, gunshots were heard,” said SP Rahul Gupta. The incident occurred around 2 pm on Saturday.

An FIR is being registered at Lazu Police Station, and further details are awaited as the investigation unfolds. The remote location of Raho village poses challenges, but a police team is en route to bring Matey’s body to the district headquarters by late night.

Yumsen Matey, a graduate in History, had served in the education department before becoming an MLA from INC in 2009. He was reportedly in BJP at present and had declared his candidacy for the upcoming 2024 assembly elections. This shocking incident follows the assassination of former Minister Tirang Aboh, also from Tirap district, by militants, a case currently under investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
